Traveling for the Build, and the Toll It Takes

Lately, we’ve been lucky to travel for work, either that means building a new deck, building new relationships or even just to create content. It’s exciting, different, and yes, in the case of deck building, lucrative. But watching Mike navigate it all has shown me just how steep the cost can be. For him, family is the core of everything; it’s what keeps him grounded, motivated, and inspired. Every trip away is a balancing act—between building in new places and being present for the people who matter most.

Traveling is fun and rewarding, no doubt - but it’s also hard. I see the mental load it carries for him, the planning, the missed moments, the adjustments. And even when it’s a good experience, it takes energy, focus, and sometimes a little sacrifice. I’m constantly reminded that the reward isn’t just in what we build or earn, it’s in the careful juggling of work, family, and life.

I’m grateful to witness his dedication firsthand, and it makes me appreciate every win, every project, and every trip in a new light.

Our latest ‘travel’ build was in Simsbury, Connecticut. We owe this one to Dan Corey from @corey.carpentry_llc and to the power of social media. I’m still amazed at how supportive the deck building community is, I don’t believe every trade community is like that.

For this one we used:

  • PWT Treated LVLs Joists

  • TimberTech Vintage Collection® in Mahogany

  • TimberTech IRX rails

  • OC Lumber
