Unexpected Plans, Our Best Deck Yet
We try to have a very clear idea of what will be done at every job. Of course, every job comes with the unexpected, which, more often than not, are not fun. Today, I’m writing about an unexpected change of plans that turned out to have been one of our best builds.
We were going into our Hamilton, MA job with the idea of doing a deck resurface (which in and of itself is never a good idea). After demo, we found the framing was—you guessed it—ROTTEN. Not only was it gross (at least to me, Alessandra), but it was also unusable. Never a fun conversation with the homeowner.
After explaining and showing the customer, we all knew what needed to be done: rebuild this deck completely. BUT, we were fully booked with scheduled jobs that couldn’t be moved, so a full rebuild was going to be a timing challenge. Did I say we love challenges? We do. So we took it on.
Mike did a complete 180. Not only was it now a full rebuild, but it also gave us the chance to think about a better way to build it. We decided that laying the deck diagonally to the house was the right choice. With the help of Fabrizio Lumber, who switched our orders and got us the right amount of materials, we scheduled the “new, not-so-new” job.
Did we keep on working right after demo? No. Did the customers get their deck right away? Nope. Did we come back 2 weeks later to finish it and give them probably our best-to-date deck? OH HECK YEAH.
Our very first (and definitely not last) diagonally laid deck with glass IG railings. It added an elegant look, made the space feel bigger, and gave it a sleek finish. Take a look and judge for yourself—we’re pretty proud of this “change of plans.”

THE BEFORE SHOTS:
Not a bad look from afar, but the house’s view from the backyard is restricted by the railings at the front.
The decking had seen better days, and after seeing this, you get why the diagonal decking made sense, right?
